Haley took a deep breath. It looked like Noa was about to be read the riot act. She couldn’t let that happen. She had to do something to intervene. She had an idea, but she wasn’t sure they would go for it but she had to try at least. “Since the murder of Melanie Smith, it seems I’ve become the focus of bad guys’ attention. My belongings have been stolen and they’ve tried to kill me. I suggest we set up a sting.”

Captain Mageo raised his eyebrows.

“I, uh, accidentally called Detective Tanielu my fiancé at a couple places.” Her face heated. “We should continue with the farce and plan a wedding and catch them when they attempt to kill me again or at the wedding, whichever happens first.”

“I don’t like it,” Noa sat up straight and grabbed the arms of the chairs. “You’re a civilian. You don’t have the training. We can’t let an innocent person be a part of this.”

Haley stood up and stared at him. “News flash, I already am a part of this. You were there. Twice.”

He looked to the captain. “We could have a couple of officers fake an engagement and draw them out.”

“I’m still the main target. You can plan as many weddings as you want. If I’m not involved, it will be pointless.”

“We’ll get a stand in,” Noa said. “We do not need to put Haley in any more danger than she is already in.”

“There is no one in this department that could pretend to be me. I’m not from here so I stand out. You don’t have any mainlanders on the force.” Haley crossed her arms over her chest.

He stood up and stood toe to toe with her. “You need to be in protective custody somewhere where they can’t find you.”

He had a good four inches on her but she wasn’t going to be intimidated. She just stared at him.

He looked at Captain Mageo for help. The captain was stoic. That was a good sign, wasn’t it?

“She has a point. She is their primary focus. If she disappeared from the island, they may, too. Move to a different island and start over. If we keep her here and have her appear to be planning a wedding. We’re buying time to draw them out. We’ll put a couple undercover with you at all times. Think of them as the best man and maid of honor.”

Noa started to protest, but the captain held a hand up.

“She’ll be under guard twenty-four seven. With only the bare minimum on the planning. Only going to a few places. Dress, cake, and venue. I will not have Haley be an open target for mad men. You two make appearances at these places to make the wedding date and location known.” The captain looked at her. “Ms. Marsh. I think part of the answer to all of this lies in your photographs. I’ll put Detective Howard in charge of the case from here on out. He can do all the leg work.
